Fashion: 1970s
Fashion in the early 1970s still consisted of many of the same looks from the 1960s. This look included bell bottoms, hot pants and many other colorful clothing items. As the years progressed in the early 1970s platform shoes came into play. Men and women both wore these high shoes. The disco look and the punk fashion came in later on and added to the fashion of the 1970s.
In the early years of this decade people wore much from earlier years. Hot pants became a staple of fashion, worn by both men and women. Many musical talents helped to broaden the world of fashion during this era. Velvet dresses, halter top, denim or satin trousers complete with sequins, sequined bra tops, and imitation rabbit coats came to be very popular during this decade. Another popular fashion trend was blouses for women that came across the shoulders. Bare midriffs were often exposed as well. Mens fashion became more colorful and became more of a disco look. Many men copied John Travoltas look on Saturday Night Fever.
In the late 1970s all clothing began modeling after disco even womens fashion. The zipper jumpsuit became very popular as did tank tops and tube tops. Custom t shirts and baseball shirts became very popular. Thanks to Farrah Fawcetts poster the one piece bathing suit gained extreme popularity. At one point it was much more popular than the bikini. Three piece suits became popular daytime wear for men during this era. Punk fashion became very popular in this era as well. Ripped jeans and t shirts were highly popular as was leopard printed shirts and Beatle boots. Cosmetics also took a turn in this era. Daytime wear was a soft natural look and the night time look was glitz and glam. Hairstyles varied from person to person and a lot of styles were in depending on which category you chose to be in.
