Fashion: 1990s



Some of the styles of the 1990s were considered anti-fashion. Overalls and flannel shirts became fashion and jeans came stone washed, giving the jeans a more natural look. Sports clothing also became very popular during this decade. During the 1990s many 1980s fashions were still present. Fashions such as spaghetti strap tank tops and mini skirts were still popular.

Several trends became popular during this time. Catsuits like worn by Michelle Pfeiffer in the Batman Returns movie became very popular. Tube skirts and bright colors were very popular in this time frame as well. Grunge became very popular during this time frame. Flannel shirts and a generally unkempt look became very popular. Messy hair or bed head was very popular in this time as well. Hippie fashions also became very popular during this time period as well. Wide leg pants took center stage as did body piercing. The belly button piercing was most popular with more body parts becoming pierced later on.

In the later 1990s many styles came into play. Lycra became very popular. A slinky lycra dress was very popular. These were typically floor length. The group Spice Girls was often associated as a fashion icon. Many girls and women followed their look and wore much of the same clothes. Another popular style that came around in this decade was the look of Goth. The Goth look consisted of all black clothing, black hair, black makeup, and different body piercing. Preppy clothing was also apparent with sweater vests and khaki pants. Hip hop fashion became very popular during this time frame. Hooded sweatshirts, baggy pants and large gold chains became very popular. Towards the end of the decade some fashions were low rise jeans, Hawaii shirts and Capri pants. The most popular color during this time was the color pink.
