Fashion: 1980s




Fashion in the 1980s changed from what it was in the 1970s. While in the 1970s loose pants and tight shirts were in fashion, in the 1980s it changed. Men and women both wore loose shirts and very tight fitting pants. Many fashion designers became very popular during this decade as well. Fashion icons such as Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein became very popular. Many actors and actresses as well as many movies and television shoes influenced people. Madonna was a well known icon as was televisions shows, such as Dynasty and Dallas. The movie Flashdance, helped create the ripped sweatshirt to become very popular.

A popular fashion era in the 1980s was the New Romantic. Most of the fashion in this time was taken from punk fashion. Many outfits were extremely outlandish. The pirate look was full of frilly shirts and high waisted baggy pants. During this time leggings were widely popular. Another popular trend that came into play during this time period is the Valley Girl. This style often paired leggings or leg warmers with a mini skirt along with a sweater. Another popular trend was tight fitting jeans with leg warmers over top of the jeans.

Power dressing became very popular in the 1980s. Shoulder ads became very popular. Silk, cotton, and wool returned during this time period and became very popular. Mens business attire saw the return of pinstripes. In the 1980s the Miami Vice look for men became very popular. This style was based after a television show of the same name. This outfit usually consists of a t shirt paired with a designer jacket. Hawaii shirts also became very popular during this time period. The Members Only jacket was very stylish during this time. In many schools you were not considered cool unless you had one of these jackets. During this time the preppie look made a very good stand up. There were many different styles and many of these showed expensive styles. If you had preppy clothing you were considered well off and in fashion.
