Fashion: Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger is a noted fashion designer in the United States. He is the founder of the Tommy Hilfiger company and has designed many clothing lines. Some of these lines include, Hilfiger Denim, True Star Gold, True Star Men, Tommy Girl, H by Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy Sport, Tommy Hilfiger for the Home and Tommy Sailing. Most of these branches have found great success in its time.

Early on in his life Tommy Hilfiger opened his own store which was named The Peoples Place. This store became a hotspot for live DJ appearances and contests. People were often there to hangout instead of shop. The Peoples Place lasted about seven years and then it went bankrupt. Hilfiger was just 25 years old when this happened. He then decided that it would be best to go into designing. He moved to New York and was offered designing assistant jobs at Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis. He had bigger things in mind so he declined the offers. In the year 1984 he started his company of the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation. By 2004 the company had grossed over $1.8 billion dollars. Eventually Tommy Hilfiger Corporation had experienced declining sales and was sold for $1.6 billion to Apax Partners.

Tommy Hilfiger himself has been surrounded by controversy several times. In May of 2006 he got into an altercation with Axel Rose the singer for Guns N Roses. Axel Rose was said to have touched his girlfriend leading Tommy Hilfiger into a fit of rage where he was restrained by his own security guards. Another controversy that Hilfiger was involved with is for manufacturing clothes in Saipan which is a United States territory. Many have claimed that working in these shops were much like working in a sweatshop. In the year 2000 the company settled a class action lawsuit brought forth by the workers.
