Fashion: 1960s
This era featured many new trends. Go go boots were highly popular as well as the bikini which was introduced in 1963 and became a staple of fashion. The mini skirt became very popular as well as tie dye and bell bottoms. Skinny jeans first made their start in this era, worn by Audrey Hepburn. More clothing materials came to be popular in this era as well. Materials like polyester and PVC were widely used in clothing during this time.
In the early 1960s Jacqueline Kennedy was a staple in fashion. She often wore the highest fashions of this era and is still known as a fashion icon today. During this time many women wore suits. Many of these suits were in pastel colors with great big buttons. Simple dresses called shifts were widely popular as well. If you went out for the evening a full ball gown was worn. These dresses usually had a low bust and tight waists. The Capri pant came into fashion during this time as well. Menswear became very bright and colorful with many frills and cravats. Later on in the mid 1960s the mini skirt came into play as did the mini dress. The mini dress was typically A-lined with no sleeves. The look of corsets and skirts that covered the knees had pretty much been eradicated. The newer look was in and it was very popular.
In the very late 1960s the hippie look came into fashion. Bell-bottomed jeans that were frayed, workshirts, tie-dyed shirts and headbands became very popular. Sandals and wearing no shoes at all became very popular. Many women during this time period decided to go braless. Peasant blouses and gypsy-style skirts became very popular during this time frame. Another popular during this time period was that of animal prints. The look of Woodstock was also widely popular during this time.
